Traditionally, any game distinguished with the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award turns into a world hit near instantly. In 2017 the winner of the biggest and most notable competition in the board game world was Kingdomino and it is no surprise that soon after, Kingdomino tournaments are being played even here in Bulgaria. If you are interested in the hobby, then surely you have already read some comments and opinions on it, but nonetheless here we will take a look at this Game Of The Year and try to find out what made it so popular.
To begin with, Kingdomino meets all the requirements to become the winner of the above-mentioned competition – it is a language-independent family game with simple rules. It’s also colorful and pleasing to the eye, all the while boasting a playtime of around 15 minutes along with relatively high replayability.
In Kingdomino each player has a small fortress around which he or she has to build an ideal, harmonious kingdom. For this purpose, players may use rectangular tiles representing different kind of terrain. Everyone chooses the type most suitable for themselves and puts it in their kingdom following certain rules. The game goes on until all available tiles have been depleted. The tricky part is to arrange them in the best possible way in order to get the most points.
The most basic rule is that in order to be placed on the board each new tile of terrain must match with an existing one in the player’s kingdom, same as in dominoes, hence the title. There are also pre-determined boundaries to the kingdom beyond which you cannot expand. This introduction more or less explains the basis of the game, as the rules are in fact quite simple. From this point on, collecting symbols and terrain tiles becomes the goal of each player and since picking the best tile is a significant advantage, the player who does so will be the last to pick in the next round - a simple but important rule which balances the game. Among the more experienced players, this is particularly important, because denying someone a tile that could potentially bring them lots of points is a key part of the game. Negotiation in the spirit of "you take this forest, leave me my meadow" is very much in place, but must be done with moderation, as the game does not support alliances between players, rather the contrary.
It has already become clear that this is a light filler game suitable for a few quick plays or to introduce someone new to the hobby. The pleasant components and the desire to neatly arrange your forest next to your pond in the finest feng shui traditions make Kingdomino a popular title among non-gamers and a fierce struggle for territory among the hardcore crowd. In both cases, my personal impressions are that it is liked equally well by everyone.
Let's be clear - Kingdomino is not an incredible, revolutionary title that climbs to the top of every chart and creates die-hard fans, but its relatively low price and simple rules naturally make it a good asset for almost every board game collection. Tournaments with it are also gaining popularity and even a highly impractical "giant version" hit the shelves. The sequel Queendomino, sporting some more complex rules, is also gaining a lot of popularity.
In conclusion, I will say that I would rather recommend the game than not, but I think the Spiel des Jahres competition has had far better winners in the past.
