A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin
In development at HBO, who have envisaged a 6-7 season TV series consisting of 13 episodes per year with a very large budget (some suggesting it may climb as high as Rome). The pilot script is complete, approved by GRRM and is currently being mulled over at HBO. When we see this on screen depends on how quickly HBO turn it around, but it's already missed the window for entering pre-production for the next year or so. Whilst it could still conceivably air in 2009 we are probably looking at 2010 at the earliest for this to realistically make it to the screen.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian by CS Lewis
Sequel to the well-received The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe from a couple of years ago. This is already filming (may be finished by now) and should be out at Easter 2008. Apparently The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair are already slated to go into production next year for release in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
This just came out, retitled The Seeker for some reason in the USA.

Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
In post-production, although apparently it will now be a direct-to-DVD release in early 2008. An animated feature starring the voices of Kiefer Sutherland (Raistlin), Lucy Lawless (Goldmoon) and Michelle Trachtenberg (Tika) with Michael Rosenbaum as Tanis, the fate of adaptions of the sequels rests on how well this does.

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien
The subject of a lengthy legal wrangle between Universal/MGM and New Line which, when finally sorted out, immediately became the centre of an immense row between Peter Jackson and head of New Line Bob Shaye (related to a lawsuit taken out by Wingnut Films because New Line allegedly mishandled financial takings for The Fellowship of the Ring). After other directors, most prominently Sam Raimi, turned down the project, it appears that New Line have adopted a conciliatory line, not challenging the results of the lawsuit and apparently now keen to woo Jackson back to the fold before their Hobbit option expires in 2010. This one will continue to run and run, but we should eventually see the film although almost certainly not this decade.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
Out in December 2007, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. If successful, work will begin next year on The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett
The first two Discworld novels are currently being adapted into a 4-hour mini-series by Sky One, following on from the success of 2006's Hogfather. Starring David Jason as Rincewind and Sean Astin as Twoflower, the mid-budget adaption ($12 million) will air at Easter 2008.

The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
Meanwhile, this film has been optioned by Sam Raimi for a film treatment. It is in development.

The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay
Optioned in 2005, director Edward Zwick (Glory, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond) was quickly attached to the project. He decided to make WWII movie Defiance instead, but if this is his next project, expect to see it in 2010. Last I heard there was still a furious debate going on about if the movie should be set in the fictional Al-Rassan of the novels or historical Spain (which Al-Rassan is based on).

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Optioned before the novel was even published, a script is apparently being revised (after it was altered to meet some of Lynch's concerns, such as removing a superfluous love story for Locke). Some have suggested that the 'heat' surrounding the project has died down due to vaguely disappointing sales for the novel (very good, but not meeting the pre-release hype), but more likely it's just taking ages to sort it out.

The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks
Optioned by Warner Brothers last year, who are apparently keen to grab another slice of the epic fantasy pie by fast-tracking a director and getting into production by a year from now. Uncharitable observers have noted that they are starting with the second novel so as to avoid litigation from the Tolkien Estate and New Line over The Sword from Shannara's notable similarities to another major fantasy film franchise from a few years ago.

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
The film rights, along with a number of other merchandising rights, were picked up by Red Eagle Entertainment several years ago for development. However, Red Eagle's questionable handling of the New Spring comic adaption led to a fierce barrage of criticism from RJ before his passing. Although Red Eagle made some noise about a year ago about attracting interest from a 'leading husband-and-wife writing team' and a 'leading director' nothing more has been heard from them, leading to the conclusion that the project has fallen through. The rights apparently revert to the Jordan Estate in the near future. However, RJ's passing and the publication of the final Wheel of Time novel - in whatever form - will likely awaken interest in this, one of the biggest-selling fantasy series of the last decade.

The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind
Optioned a year ago by Sam Raimi, a TV mini-series version of Wizards' First Rule has been in development since. Apparently there may be some movement on this early next year. This being an action-comedy interpretation of the source material, starring Bruce Campbell as Zedd, is likely wishful thinking.

А Runelords? От доста време работят по филма, май към края на 2008 ще излезе най-после?

Add the David Farland books to the list of books optioned that will never be made into movies.

David Jason
