David Simon has said that Omar is based on Shorty Boyd, Donnie Andrews, Ferdinand Harvin, Billy Outlaw and Anthony Hollie, Baltimore stickup men between the 1980s and early 2000s who robbed drug dealers. Donnie Andrews later reformed, is married, and now helps troubled youths.

The show is being remastered for HD, and it's supposed to marathon on HBO at some point in the near future. However, exactly when that'll happen isn't nailed down just yet: though HBO began running promos advertising the HD episodes' premiere on September 4th (as seen above), HBO tells us that the episodes "aren’t ready yet." The episodes are still being reviewed, and HBO says that it hopes to share more soon.

With their three-dimensional characters, multi-leveled narratives, and underlying passion for social justice, your shows have been compared to realist novels in the tradition of Dickens, Zola, or Sinclair Lewis. Do you think they are engaging with viewers in a way that novels no longer do?

I’m working with Richard Price, whose Clockers was so valuable, really The Grapes of Wrath of the crack epidemic. And Dennis Lehane, whose The Given Day about the Boston police riots is magnificent. And George Pelecanos. There’s a lot of socially-aware writing going on. Maybe not the literary novels so much—I don’t know.

Listen, I have lousy numbers for TV, but on a bad night I’ll get two million viewers. If you sold two million hardback books, you’d have a New York Times bestseller for a year. But at the same time, nobody’s running to do The Wire. I’ve sort of shown Hollywood how to make a show that nobody wants to watch, so nobody’s trying to replicate it.

Ще се взима догодина на по-приемлива цена.

Още повече, че има спорове между феновете доколко блу-рей версията отговаря на творческото виждане на създателите на сериала, които нарочно са го заснели в 4:3, а блуреят е в 16:9.

There are scenes that clearly improve in HD and in the widescreen format. But there are things that are not improved. And even with our best resizing, touchups and maneuver, there are some things that are simply not as good. That’s the inevitability: This new version, after all, exists in an aspect ratio that simply wasn’t intended or serviced by the filmmakers when the camera was rolling and the shot was framed.

В повечето случаи разширяването на кадъра от 4:3 на 16:9 е пълен потрес. Търсеното въздействие с композицията на кадъра се губи и персонажите се "смаляват" и "губят" в новата рамка. Вече не съм сигурен, че ще си взимам блурея.

Changing OAR isn't just about crew being visible. You're altering the original compositions that the cinematographer and director created. And those compositions were created for a reason. That's like going in and changing the wording throughout a novel, or cutting the sides off a painting to fit it in a different frame. We don't do that, yet changing aspect ratio is somehow okay?

You're also making it look like they didn't know how to frame a shot to save their lives. I cringe at the amount of dead space at the sides of these widescreen episodes.

No. It makes one of the best TV shows ever look like it was lensed by some bumblef*** that they found off of the street.
