So, I decided to write my long post about Jotaro after seeing some more inexplicable Jotaro hate on the internet. I doubt anyone would have the attention span to read it to the end, but I needed to get it out of my system. So there. Reasons why Jotaro is awesome:
Jotaro is the most introverted, stoic and taciturn of all the Jojos. As such he keeps everything inside and doesn't show much emotion. Or the emotion he shows is limited to anger, snarky remarks and annoyed barking at his mom and grandpa. He’s quite the tsundere, Jotaro. I guess that's why people think he lacks character or that he’s not original enough. But I think he has PLENTY of character and considering that he appears in 4 parts, he’s also one of the most developed Jojos if not the most developed one. It’s just not that obvious.
I like how Araki develops him with subtle hints here and there instead of using straightforward easily recognizable methods like Joseph’s babbling or Johnny’s dramatic background story. There's this almost Hemingway-ish understatement in Jotaro's character. I'm not even sure if Araki does it intentionally or it's just in my head.
As an example I'll give the first Oingo Boingo story, when Oingo impersonated Jotaro. Until then, we've known Jotaro as this coolheaded aloof character: the guy who watches all the idiocy around him while muttering Yare Yare Daze; the guy who speaks in cheesy one liners while pulverizing his opponent. Even his anger is silent and cold (at least on the surface and before the Oraoraoraaaaa explosion). We've seen also the responsible Jotaro: the one that locked himself in a cage, so that he doesn't hurt people; the one that accepted his duty as a Joestar and as a son without complaining even though this duty could very well kill him and even if deep inside he was probably freaking out. So, there's this lovely oxymoronic mixture of desperate maturity and quiet temerity in Jotaro's character. And then suddenly Polnareff asks him to "do that thing again" (the trick with the cigarettes and the juice) and you realize that, yeah, Jotaro is 17, he's no longer the lone distant wolf from the beginning, he's a true part of this epic sausage fest and when you're not watching, he's probably occupying his time with sophisticated activities such as drinking beer with his buddies, pronouncing long words with burps or spelling his name on the ground with piss.
That's it - the most human bits and pieces of Jotaro’s character are the ones we don't see but learn about indirectly. Like the research he did on some starfish in Morioh. He never talked about his love of biology (contrary to the Tumblrette's feverish ideas of him having sex with dolphins, when he's not too busy banging Kakyoin). He never said he was doing research. He just suddenly wrote a fuckin' PhD thesis on starfish. And writing a PhD thesis requires devotion, passion for science and a very special mindset. And YEARS of prior university education. Serious business, that. We've all seen what Jotaro's intellect is capable of during his battles, but the narrator note at the end of part 4 made me picture him in my mind doing acts of creation instead of destruction: collecting and analyzing samples on the beach or reading and writing science texts in his hotel room... A whole new facet of Jotaro, hidden in just this one sentence. And it didn't feel like a patch on the character either. It felt right and consistent with what was already there. I kept remembering the "Maybe it’s because I liked Columbo as a kid..." line. Yeah, that's the kind of inquisitive methodical restless mind you need to have in order to succeed in science. Also, his thesis is the explanation why he didn't kick Kira's ass himself. He was too busy writing. I can empathize with that.

Jotaro appears very briefly in pt.5 but there is this heartbreaking moment with the Crusaders picture on his desk. This moment speaks tons about Jotaro’s inner world and his feelings for his friends. Imagine how he put the picture in a frame with care and how he placed it right in front of himself, where he can look at it often. That’s what people do with pictures of their families. We never saw him crying for Avdol, Kakyoin and Iggy, but this picture there, YEARS after part 3, can tell you more about Jotaro’s grief than a thousand bawling scenes. Again, quiet, reserved, subtle and deep – so totally Jotaro.
Then we see Jotaro, the dad. And in a way he's still the antisocial ass from Stardust Crusaders who shouts obscenities at annoying women, but in a way he isn't. Jolyne’s retrospections tell a story of a failed marriage and of a father who was never there. Was it a happy marriage once, before the secrets and constant absences killed it? Was this marriage Jotaro's unsuccessful attempt to gain some normalcy in his life? Whatever it is, Jolyne is his kid and he loves her in his tsundere-ish awkward way. And he will do everything to protect her, whether it is by hurting her with his absence, by being so stereotypically wary of her prospective boyfriends or by dying for her.
So, yeah. Jotaro is a fairly diverse and multifaceted character and in these 4 parts of the Jojo series we’ve seen glimpses of his many sides. You can recognize all the typical features of a Jojo – strength, loyalty, intelligence, indomitable spirit, but also kindness, vulnerability. And his gruff behaviour and apparent lack of emotion are his trademark. He’s a beautifully fleshed out character, so much more than your standard shonen/seinen protagonist. And although I love all of the Jojos, I can’t help but love him just a little bit more.
Also, he’s hot.
